President Bola Tinubu spoke by telephone on Monday with Nigerian-British boxing champion Anthony Joshua after the athlete was injured in a road crash in Ogun State that claimed the lives of two of his associates.
In a statement released by his spokesman Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu said he personally conveyed his condolences to Joshua regarding the deaths of his two associates and offered prayers for his recovery. The president confirmed that Joshua assured him he was receiving quality medical care.
Tinubu also spoke with Joshua’s mother to offer support and prayers, noting that she expressed appreciation for his call. Additionally, the president confirmed speaking with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital with the boxer and pledged to ensure Joshua receives optimal medical attention.
The president, who is currently traveling abroad, had earlier posted a message on X expressing sympathy for Joshua and his family over the incident, which occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
“I sympathize with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident,” Tinubu wrote. “As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride.”
The accident happened in the Makun area of Ogun State when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua, with registration number KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck.
According to Afolabi Odunsi, Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Ogun State, the crash resulted from excessive speeding and improper overtaking. The driver reportedly attempted to overtake from the right side and struck the stationary vehicle.
Five people were involved in the accident—one person sustained injuries, two were unharmed, and two others lost their lives. Joshua, who was injured, was transported to an undisclosed hospital by his security detail. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Livewell Hospital Morgue in Sagamu, as confirmed by Ogun State Police Command spokesman DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.
