Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was honored with the traditional title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland during a ceremony held on Sunday at the Alaafin’s Palace in Oyo Town. The title was bestowed by Oba Abimbola Owoade, the Alaafin of Oyo.
Rt. Adebo Ogundoyin, speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, praised the conferment as a fitting recognition of the younger Tinubu’s youth influence and charitable work.
In his congratulatory statement, Ogundoyin emphasized that the installation represents more than symbolic recognition, characterizing it as an appointment to service and leadership responsibility within Yorubaland.
“This title transcends ceremony—it embodies a commitment to service and acknowledges leadership capability,” Ogundoyin stated, noting that the honor reflects core Yoruba values of excellence, community contribution and heritage preservation.
The speaker also praised the Alaafin for his dedication to preserving Yoruba traditions and reinforcing cultural institutions by bestowing titles upon individuals who exemplify the region’s heritage.
Ogundoyin encouraged Tinubu to leverage his new position to advance unity, cultural identity, youth development and long-term progress throughout Yorubaland.
Born on October 13, 1985, Tinubu holds both a Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws in Corporate and Commercial Law from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom. He was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 2013.
Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, representing Zamfara West Senatorial District and chairing the Senate Committee on Water Resources and Sanitation, also received the title of Obaloyin of Yorubaland during the ceremony.
High-profile attendees included former Ogun State governor Gbenga Daniel, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives members led by deputy speaker Benjamin Kalu, Federal Executive Council members, and traditional rulers from Nigeria and Benin Republic.
Other notable guests included Power Minister Bayo Adelabu, Statistician General Adeyemo Adeniran, Finance Minister and coordinating minister of the economy Olawale Edun, and Senator Teslim Folarin.
Local traders gathered near the venue, while Fuji musician Saheed Osupa provided entertainment.
The ancient kingdom of Oyo, located in present-day Nigeria, was established approximately one thousand years ago by Oranmiyan of the Yoruba people. The kingdom subsequently developed into one of the most influential states across the Yoruba-speaking territories of West Africa.
