The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has urged newly promoted Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) to see their elevation as a call to greater responsibility rather than a personal reward.
Disu delivered the message on Monday during the decoration ceremony at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
He emphasized zero tolerance for indiscipline, abuse of office, corruption, or negligence, insisting that policing must be professional, respectful of human rights, and responsive to the needs of the public. “Officers under your command must remain visible, approachable, and accountable,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of public trust, the IGP noted that effective law enforcement depends on strong community relations and intelligence gathering. He described the ceremony as symbolic of a strategic investment in leadership at a time when the country needs a more efficient and accountable police force.
Disu congratulated the officers, stressing that their promotions were earned through years of disciplined service but come with heightened expectations. “This promotion is not a reward; it is a responsibility,” he said, urging them to demonstrate integrity, discipline, and respect for the rule of law.
The IGP also warned that officers would be held accountable not only for operational outcomes but also for the conduct of personnel under their supervision. He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to people-oriented policing as a core operational principle.
As part of ongoing reforms, Disu directed the new senior officers to embrace innovation, improve operational efficiency, and eliminate outdated practices. He further announced that all newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General (DIGs) and AIGs would attend a strategic leadership retreat starting March 24, 2026. Organized by the Police Reform Secretariat in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the retreat aims to strengthen leadership, professionalism, and modern policing practices.
The IGP also encouraged senior officers to mentor junior personnel, identify talent, and build capacity to maintain professional standards. He assured that future promotions would continue to be based on merit, performance, and integrity.
In addition, Disu revealed plans for the second edition of National Police Day on April 7, 2026, with week-long activities starting March 30, including medical outreach and community engagement initiatives across commands, culminating in a grand parade and awards ceremony to recognize outstanding officers.
He directed all commands to actively participate and execute the programmes professionally, while appreciating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support in strengthening national security and commending the Police Service Commission for ensuring transparency in the promotion process.
