President Bola Tinubu has hailed the Ola Olukoyede leadership of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for achieving new heights in asset recovery and convictions. The President, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, recently revealed that the EFCC has recorded more than 7,000 convictions in the first 2 years of his government.

Speaking via his keynote address and official opening of the 7th EFCC-NJI Capacity Building Workshop for Justices and Judges, on Monday, October 20, 2025, at the National Judicial Institute, Abuja, Tinubu said that the commission has helped his administration’s fight to guarantee public accountability.

According to him, making EFCC independent has given the commission an enabling environment to make positive strides in the battle against corruption in Nigeria.

Hailing Olukoyede for a job well done, BAT stated that recovered proceeds of crime by the agency have been ploughed back into the economy to fund key social investment programmes.

“As an administration we have prioritized public accountability by strengthening the anti-corruption agencies and accorded them the needed independence to execute their statutory mandates.

This enabling environment is evident in the impact that has been made in the last two years.

The EFCC for example has recorded over 7,000 convictions in the first two years of the present administration and recovered assets in excess of Five Hundred Billion Naira.

Recovered proceeds of crime by the agency have been ploughed back into the economy to fund critical social investment programmes, including the Students Loan and Consumer Credit schemes,” he said.

Tinubu further called on judges and justices to keep giving their all in the fight against corruption, stressing that the judiciary is absolutely critical to a successful anti-crime fight.

He concluded by saying that corruption can be eradicated in the country if citizens and politicians start deciding to do what is right.

“We have an opportunity to consolidate the efforts of the last two years to deliver an optimal anti-corruption framework that will support our peaceful growth and development.

A Nigeria free of corruption is possible, if we all commit to doing what is right in our respective spheres of influence and ensuring that those who deviate from the norm are not allowed to go scot-free.

A robust judicial system is central to the success of anti corruption efforts and I count on our judges.

We have allowed both the judiciary and the anti-graft agencies to exercise their constitutional and statutory powers to dispense justice and restore sanity. The evidence is before your eyes.

We cannot claim to have excelled in our pursuit of a transparent system if we do not live by such examples.

Courts and judges are strong pillars of the anti-corruption process.

The Presidency has dismissed the political strength of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, insisting that President Bola Tinubu is no longer under any threat from the former Labour Party presidential candidate. Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, made the remarks during an appearance on the *Mic On Podcast*, where he defended the Tinubu administration against criticisms from the opposition. According to Dare, while Obi may have posed a significant political challenge in the past, the current administration believes its achievements have strengthened President Tinubu’s position ahead of future elections. He also rejected calls by Obi for President Tinubu to resign, arguing that such demands have no constitutional basis. “The government is not afraid of Peter Obi. Just as he has the right to ask President Tinubu to resign, the government also has the right to tell him that the President will not resign because there is no basis for such a demand,” Dare said. He stressed that Nigeria operates a constitutional presidential system with elections held every four years, adding that the proper avenue for seeking political change is through the ballot box. Dare maintained that the administration has made measurable progress in addressing the country's challenges, insisting that its performance has earned it public confidence. According to him, the government has successfully confronted critical national issues and remains focused on delivering its mandate rather than being distracted by opposition rhetoric. The presidential aide further claimed that Obi no longer represents the political force he once did, stating that the President now stands on a stronger political footing because of his administration’s record. He concluded by expressing confidence that Obi would be unable to repeat his 2023 electoral success over Tinubu in Lagos State. “Peter Obi was a threat before, but today he is no longer a threat because we stand on the solid ground of performance. We have been able to interrogate the problems of this country. Peter Obi will not defeat President Tinubu in Lagos again,” Dare declared.

Except the society has full confidence that those who pillage our resources will be subjected to the rule of law and brought to justice through a fair and transparent process of adjudication, the sneers over our collective commitment to fighting corruption will only get louder.

This point should resonate with your lordships. Your vantage position on the bench does not insulate you from the consequences of corruption.

There are no special roads, hospitals or communities for judges. We all shop in the same markets and face the same risk of insecurity which is a culmination of decades of willful theft and wastage of the nation’s resources by corrupt public officials.

I believe that it is in the interest of all Nigerians, members of the executive, the legislature and the judiciary to join hands in this important task of fighting and winning the war against corruption in Nigeria,” he added.
