The First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has officially renamed the revamped National Model Creche and Nursery in Abuja to the Dr. Mrs. Victoria Gowon National Creche and Nursery, in tribute to Victoria Gowon, the wife of former military head of state Yakubu Gowon.
Established in April 2001, the facility had been non-operational since the bomb explosion that occurred at the Police headquarters in Abuja in June 2011.
During the commissioning on Tuesday, Mrs. Tinubu, represented by the wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima, emphasized the significance of initiatives like the nursery in laying the foundation for progress and a promising future for Nigeria and fostering improved bonding between mothers and their children.
“Let us continue to work together, supporting, empowering, and uplifting one another as we strive for a more inclusive and equitable society. This facility will serve as a preparatory ground for early childhood care, educational, and recreational activities for the children, aligning with the policy thrust to improve the Baby Friendly Initiative of the Federal Government of Nigeria under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration,” she stated.
“As a mother and advocate for a better life for families, I am passionate about championing initiatives that empower and uplift the lives of our citizens, especially our women. The establishment of the Workplace Nursery stands as a testament to this administration’s dedication to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for working and nursing mothers,” she added.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, was also present at the commissioning ceremony.
