“Providing citizens with regular and affordable access to electricity constitutes energy security. Everyone needs power. Industries, businesses, and small enterprises all need adequate energy to operate. State-generated electricity is sufficient to power the entire state. Despite our best efforts, this is not the case since the energy we generate is fed into the national grid and transmitted throughout the country,” Semenitari said.
Speaking further, she highlighted some of the areas that Fubara will focus on in the energy sector upon assuming office.
•Audit the energy requirements of the State and develop a plan to secure energy security for the State; Reconnect Emohua, Ikwerre, and other affected local government areas to the national grid;
• Support the PHEDC to increase power allocation to the State to ensure citizens’ better access to electricity;
• Invest in off-grid power systems to provide stable and affordable electricity to rural communities in partnership with local government councils, the private sector, and development agencies;
• Invest in solar systems to power all public institutions, especially health and educational institutions, and street lights; and
• Embark on rural electrification projects to increase access to energy in rural communities.
