The Russian Government has said that it sees no immediate diplomatic solution amid the war in Ukraine.
This is coming hours after launching its largest ever drone and missile assault on the Zelensky-led nation.
The attack that lasted hours in Ukraine came just after a phone call between the US and Russian presidents ended without any breakthrough.
AFP journalists in Kyiv confirmed that drones were heard buzzing over the capital and explosions took place throughout the night as Ukrainian air defence systems fended off the attack.
According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russia is focused on achieving its goals as far as the special military operation is concerned, and while a diplomatic solution is preferred, the journey continues until it is possible.
“We are interested in achieving our goals in the course of the special military operation and it is preferable to do it by political and diplomatic means.
But as long as that is not possible, we are continuing the special operation,” he said.
US President Donald Trump had said that no progress was made when he discussed with President Vladimir Putin to end the war, with the Russian Government vowing to keep pursuing its war aims.
A senior Ukrainian official disclosed that Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky were planning to speak on Friday.
A Kyiv resident, Tymur, revealed that the latest assault in the early hours of Friday was different from the previous Russian attacks.
“Nothing like this attack had ever happened before. There have never been so many explosions,” he noted.
President Volodymyr Zelensky maintained that air alerts were already echoing out across Ukraine as the Trump-Putin call got underway.
He noted that Russia keeps showing that it is not interested in ending the terror, stressing that the USSR government will not quit being destructive.
He urged the United States to put more pressure on Moscow to stop the attacks, claiming that the city recently announced new territorial gains on the front line with the capture of a village in the Donetsk region.
“Yet again, Russia is showing it has no intention of ending the war and terror.
All of this is clear evidence that without truly large-scale pressure, Russia will not change its dumb, destructive behaviour,” he wrote on social media.
Poland said that its embassy building in Kyiv was damaged during the attack, even though no staff was harmed.
Germany’s foreign ministry also said that the timing of the attack proves that Moscow “continues to rely on brute force.”
Overnight Russia attacks have been a regular occurrence lately, with reports saying Moscow launched a record number of drones and missiles at Ukraine in June when direct peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow didn’t yield expected results.
AFP journalists saw several Kyiv residents taking shelter in a metro station, and Yuliia Golovnina, who also uses the station as cover, stated that it is extremely worrying when citizens hear repeated explosions during the terrifying attacks.
“Will there be another one? Will something collapse on you?
So in those seconds, you just hold your breath and wait to see what happens next,” she added.
