Dr. Ibrahim Dankwambo, the Senator representing Gombe North, has displayed remarkable integrity by choosing to follow in the footsteps of former Ogun State Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel by forfeiting his pension during his tenure as former Governor of Gombe State. This principled decision aims to uphold a sense of duty and responsibility toward his people.
Notably, Otunba Gbenga Daniel was the first former governor to set aside his benefits in order to maintain the public’s trust and confidence, a move that garnered widespread recognition. Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, former Governor of Niger State, later emulated this gesture.
Dr. Dankwambo, through this decision, has urged Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya to suspend the monthly pension and allowance that he receives as a former governor.
The Senator representing Gombe North, Dr. Ibrahim Dankwambo, has urged the state governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, to suspend the monthly pension and allowance of N694,557.82 accrued to him as a former governor.
He disclosed that the decision was following due consultation with relevant stakeholders, including Civil Society Organizations, adding that it was a sequel to his letter to Yahaya on issues relating to security allowances to governors.
The letter partly read, “Further to my letter to His Excellency dated September 28, 2023, on issues relating to security allowance to governors as per approval dated 20/09/2002, yours of 14/06/2019, and the Executive Pension Act of 2007 (as amended) and other matters relating therein.
“I have interacted with Civil Society Organizations, integrity institutions, friends, and associates on the above and decided to put them on hold and make a refund as appropriate.
“I, therefore, write to request the suspension of my monthly pension/allowance of N694,557.82 only being paid to me as the former Governor of Gombe State.”
Dankwambo added that upon the termination of his tenure as governor, he has never benefited from perks accrued to former governors, adding, “Also note that since I left office in 2019, I have never benefited from any welfare packages, be it medical, furniture, transportation, etc.”
