Senator Gbenga Daniel, FNSE, FAEng, on Thursday, July 4, made a compelling case for the establishment of a Federal Medical Center (FMC) in the Ijebu division. During a recent session, he commended the initiator of the bill aimed at enhancing medical healthcare access for the people, emphasizing the critical importance of prioritizing health with the adage “health is wealth.”
Senator Daniel expressed concern over the omission of the Ijebu division, which he represents, from the list of areas slated for new medical facilities. He highlighted the historical significance and prominence of the Ijebu division, noting that it is one of the oldest divisions and comprises nearly 50% of Ogun State’s local governments. Despite the creation of new states from other divisions, the Ijebu division remains a vital part of Ogun State, encompassing six local governments, alongside three from the Remo area, totaling nine local governments out of the state’s 20.
The Senator pointed out that although there is a functional Federal Medical Center in Abeokuta, the distance and poor road conditions make it difficult for residents of Ijebuland to access it, often requiring 3-4 hours of travel. He passionately appealed for the inclusion of a Federal Medical Center in Ijebu-Ode, the capital of the Ijebu division, to ensure that residents can receive timely and adequate healthcare services. “The people of Ijebuland deserve equitable access to healthcare facilities,” he stated. “It is imperative that we address the healthcare access disparities within Ogun State.”
Senator Daniel’s advocacy underscores the urgent need to ensure that the people of Ijebuland have equitable access to medical facilities.
