Senator Saliu Mustapha, representing Kwara Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing recent developments within the party’s Kwara State chapter.
Mustapha announced his resignation on Thursday, August 20, 2026, through his Instagram page, where he shared a copy of his resignation letter dated August 14, 2026.
The letter was addressed to the APC chairman of Gambari Ward 1 in Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The senator explained that his decision followed extensive consultations with political supporters, party stakeholders, constituents across Kwara Central and other concerned residents of the state.
According to him, the decision was carefully considered and was not made out of impulse.
Mustapha said his political choices have consistently been influenced by his commitment to putting people, principles and purpose at the centre of political activities.
He explained that he had taken time to consult with relevant stakeholders and carefully considered their views before arriving at his decision to leave the ruling party.
Despite resigning from the APC, the senator expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the national leadership of the party for the relationships, experiences and opportunities he enjoyed during his period as a member.
His resignation comes amid growing disagreements and political tensions within the APC in Kwara State, particularly as politicians and stakeholders begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mustapha had previously been associated with the G15/TOP group, a faction of APC stakeholders in Kwara State who have raised concerns over the direction and leadership of the party in the state.
His departure is therefore expected to have political implications for the APC as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
The senator was elected to the National Assembly on the APC platform, making his decision to quit the party a notable development in Kwara State politics.
The resignation also comes at a time when political realignments are taking place across the country, with several politicians and political groups reviewing their alliances ahead of the next general elections.
Meanwhile, a separate political dispute involving former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has also generated attention within the APC. Okorocha has reportedly challenged the outcome of the party’s May 18 primary, claiming that he secured 150,780 votes against Governor Hope Uzodimma’s 102,158 votes, while the returning officer announced Uzodimma as the winner with 230,464 votes.
The dispute has also raised questions over whether Uzodimma, whose current tenure as governor is expected to run until January 2028, can constitutionally contest the 2027 senatorial election.
With Mustapha’s resignation, attention will now turn to his next political move and the possible impact of his departure on the APC’s structure in Kwara Central ahead of the 2027 elections.
