Former Benue State Governor and current Senator Gabriel Suswam has resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s persistent internal conflicts.
In a resignation letter addressed to his Mbagber Council Ward in Logo Local Government Area and released to journalists in Makurdi on Wednesday, Suswam described his decision as difficult but necessary.
The senator, who served Benue as governor for two terms and previously represented his constituency in the House of Representatives, acknowledged the opportunities the PDP had afforded him over the decades.
“For these opportunities and the trust reposed in me at different times, I remain sincerely grateful,” Suswam stated in the letter.
However, he expressed deep concern over the party’s current state, describing it as “perpetually trapped in crisis mode” and operating “in a state of deep internal dysfunction.”
According to Suswam, the PDP—once a symbol of unity and progressive opposition—has become consumed by ongoing disputes over leadership, structure, discipline, and ideology. He noted that various reconciliation efforts and interventions have failed to produce meaningful solutions.
“The party today appears to be an institution in political intensive care, with no consensus diagnosis and no agreed treatment plan in sight,” he remarked.
The former governor said his democratic principles and commitment to nation-building made it untenable to remain in a party that has become “an arena of endless internal warfare” rather than a platform for constructive engagement.
Suswam concluded his letter by wishing the PDP well, expressing hope that the party might eventually resolve its internal contradictions, while thanking members at all levels for the shared journey.
