A chieftain of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), Sergius Ogun, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration over the continued retention of Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, amid growing public scrutiny surrounding his office.

Speaking during an interview on News Central TV, the former lawmaker argued that the President must take responsibility for the actions of his appointees, insisting that any controversy involving the Chief of Staff ultimately reflects on the Presidency.

Ogun maintained that Gbajabiamila serves at the pleasure of the President and acts based on presidential directives, stressing that his continued stay in office suggests he still enjoys Tinubu’s confidence despite criticisms from some quarters.

“He sits there as Chief of Staff. He is only an errand boy. If you have somebody who is your Chief of Staff and anything happens, the buck stops at the table of the President because he is the one that appointed him,” Ogun said.

The NDC chieftain contrasted the situation with what he claimed would have happened under former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

According to him, Obi would have suspended any government official facing allegations to allow an independent investigation, demonstrating that no public office holder is above the law.

“If Peter Obi were the President and somebody in his government was accused of something, he would suspend that person and allow investigation to take place. That is how you show Nigerians that nobody is above the law,” he stated.

Ogun further accused the Tinubu administration of prioritizing political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections instead of addressing Nigeria’s pressing socio-economic challenges.

He argued that insecurity, poverty, and the nation’s struggling economy require urgent attention, alleging that the government has devoted more energy to electoral planning than governance.

The former lawmaker also dismissed claims that the current administration inherited a weak economy from the previous government, noting that many members of Tinubu’s team actively supported former President Muhammadu Buhari during his tenure.

“You cannot say you inherited a bad economy from Buhari when you were among those campaigning for Buhari during his elections,” Ogun said.

He added that opposition groups are preparing technological measures to monitor the 2027 elections, claiming that artificial intelligence would be deployed to independently track and verify election results shortly after voting concludes.

According to him, such innovations would enhance transparency and enable Nigerians to know the outcome of elections within hours.
