Veteran Nigerian singer, Seyi Sodimu has revealed the important lesson he learned after his classic record, “Love Me Jeje” earned Tems a Grammy award earlier this year.
Speaking during an interview with Saturday Beats, Seyi disclosed that the Grammy recognition only proves that creatives should always give their best in all of their endeavours. According to him, the fact that he put in 100 per cent while writing the hit song is the major reason why it could earn a Grammy nomination and award 2 decades later.
“The lesson I learnt from recording Love Me Jeje is to always do your best. When I wrote that song, I put in 100 per cent. That is why over 20 years later, it won a Grammy. So, whatever you do, put in your best,” he said.
Sodimu maintained that he feels like a proud dad watching the new-generation Afrobeats superstars take the country’s music industry to greater heights, and it is proof that all of the creative efforts put in by the older generation was not in vain.
His words, “I feel so proud because when we were putting in the work over 20 years ago, we always knew this day would come. Back then, we did so much with so little. Seeing all these young artistes and what they are doing with afrobeats, I feel like a proud father. It’s like being a Jay Jay Okocha in this generation.”
Seyi shared that he is currently working on a documentary that will detail everything about his personal life, music career, and the making of his hit record that has now become a part of Grammy history, thanks to Tems‘ remake. “I am working on a documentary on my life’s story, how we made Love Me Jeje, bringing out new artistes and possibly releasing The Best of Seyi Sodimu, a collection of my songs,” he added.
Tems’ remade version of “Love Me Jeje” was a smash hit off her debut album, “Born in the Wild,” which was released under RCA Records. Its success earned her a Grammy win at the 2024 edition of the awards, cementing her reputation as a global superstar and giving new life to an iconic record that Nigerians will always be fond of.
