Seyi Tinubu Admits Nigerians Are Facing Hardship Over Economic Reforms

Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has acknowledged that Nigerians are experiencing economic hardship as the Federal Government implements major economic reforms.

He admitted that the changes introduced by the administration have placed considerable pressure on households, with many families struggling to cope with rising living costs and stretched budgets.

Seyi made the remarks on Monday, October 12, during the inaugural Seyi Tinubu Colloquium held at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos.

Speaking at the event, he said every generation inherits challenges from its predecessors but has a responsibility to make decisions that will improve the country and create a better future for the next generation.

He argued that President Tinubu’s administration had chosen to confront Nigeria’s longstanding economic problems rather than leave them unresolved for future leaders.

According to him, the government’s policies are intended to address fundamental issues affecting how the country generates revenue, manages its finances and creates economic opportunities.

Seyi identified the removal of the petrol subsidy, reforms to the foreign exchange system and the overhaul of the tax structure as some of the major decisions shaping Nigeria’s economic direction.

He acknowledged, however, that the impact of these policies had not been easy for ordinary Nigerians, particularly families dealing with increased financial pressure.

“Changes have not been easy. Families whose budgets have been stretched, the pain was immediate, the lasting improvement more difficult to feel and touch, yet they are no less real,” he said.

He maintained that although the immediate effects of the reforms were difficult, the administration’s decisions were intended to deliver long-term benefits to the country.

Using infrastructure and institutional development as examples, Seyi explained that decisions taken today could create opportunities for future generations, even if their full benefits were not immediately visible.

He noted that roads constructed today would serve children and generations yet unborn, while stronger public institutions could help protect opportunities for Nigerians in the years ahead.

The President’s son also expressed support for his father’s economic policies, saying he believed the future Nigerians would inherit would depend significantly on the decisions made by leaders today.

“I support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reforms because we will inherit a future built by leaders of today,” he stated.

Seyi further called on young Nigerians to take a more active role in leadership and governance, stressing that the responsibility for building a better country should not be left to political officeholders alone.

He urged young people to participate in the leadership process and contribute to decisions that would shape the country’s future.

“That is why I also believe we have the responsibility to participate in the leadership and ensure that what is decided today will benefit all of us tomorrow,” he added.

His remarks come amid continued public debate over the economic consequences of the Federal Government’s policies, particularly petrol subsidy removal, foreign exchange reforms and changes to the tax system.

While the administration has defended the reforms as necessary to address structural weaknesses in the economy, many Nigerians continue to express concerns about the cost of living and the pressure on household incomes.

Seyi’s comments acknowledged the immediate difficulties associated with the changes while maintaining that the policies were intended to improve Nigeria’s long-term economic prospects.
