Sheikh Muhammad Robiu Adebayo AbdulMalik, widely known as Baba L’Oworo, has marked his 90th birthday, an occasion that has prompted widespread reflection on a life defined not merely by longevity, but by profound spiritual influence, generosity, and unwavering integrity. Across Nigeria, West Africa, and the global Muslim community, the milestone is being celebrated as a testament to a legacy that has shaped generations.

Born on 2 April 1936, Sheikh AbdulMalik’s journey into Islamic scholarship began in the traditional manner, with early immersion in Qur’anic education. From childhood, he demonstrated a deep commitment to both learning and discipline. His teachers instilled in him not only mastery of religious texts but also the cultivation of character—patience, humility, and a strong sense of moral accountability. These formative values would come to define his lifelong approach to leadership and service.

Over the past six decades, Baba L’Oworo has established himself as one of the most respected Islamic scholars in Nigeria and beyond. His influence has grown steadily, not through self-promotion or spectacle, but through the quiet consistency of his conduct and the authenticity of his teachings. Known for his calm temperament and principled outlook, he has remained a steady moral presence in a rapidly changing world.

A significant aspect of his legacy is the establishment of Jam’iyyatu Lutfullahi International, a spiritual movement devoted to prayer, discipline, and communal upliftment. What began as a modest religious gathering has evolved into a global organisation with branches spanning the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Egypt, Canada, Morocco, and several other countries, alongside a strong base in Nigeria. Through this platform, his teachings on devotion, humility, and service have reached a diverse and international audience.

Gatherings organised by the movement are characterised by deep spiritual reflection, including Qur’anic recitation, collective prayers, and a strong sense of community. However, Sheikh AbdulMalik has consistently emphasised that religion must extend beyond ritual practice. He has often reminded his followers that faith is incomplete without compassion, urging them to embody honesty, kindness, and social responsibility in their daily lives.

Among the many qualities for which Baba L’Oworo is admired, his generosity stands out prominently. Over the decades, he has quietly provided support to individuals and families facing hardship, offering assistance with education, healthcare, and basic needs. Notably, his acts of kindness have transcended religious and ethnic boundaries, benefiting both Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

In communities around Oworonshoki in Lagos, where his spiritual base is located, stories of his generosity are widely shared. Residents regard him not only as a cleric but as a compassionate elder whose home has long served as a refuge for those in need of guidance or support. Associates and followers frequently describe him as exceptionally honest and selfless, a man whose actions consistently reflect his teachings.

Closely linked to this generosity is his reputation for integrity. In a time when public trust in leadership can be uncertain, Sheikh AbdulMalik is widely regarded as a figure of moral authority. Those who have known him for many years speak of his reliability, emphasising that his word is dependable and his commitments are always honoured. This has earned him respect beyond religious circles, with individuals from various backgrounds seeking his counsel.

His teachings have consistently underscored the importance of character, advocating honesty in speech, fairness in business, humility in leadership, and compassion towards others. For his followers, these are not abstract principles but lived realities, demonstrated daily through his example.

Perhaps the most enduring aspect of his legacy is the impact he has had on generations of students and mentees. Many who studied under him have gone on to become scholars, professionals, and community leaders in Nigeria and across the diaspora. They credit their ethical grounding and personal discipline to the guidance they received from him.

Despite his global influence, those closest to Baba L’Oworo highlight his humility as his defining trait. Even at 90, he remains deeply engaged in spiritual practice—teaching, offering counsel, and devoting time to worship. Visitors often encounter him in quiet reflection, a testament to his lifelong dedication to faith.
