Vice President Kashim Shettima has disclosed that some individuals once tried to sow distrust between him and President Bola Tinubu shortly after they assumed office in 2023.
Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja at the public presentation of the autobiography of former Head of State Yakubu Gowon, Shettima said the controversy stemmed from traditional outfits he gave Tinubu during the 2023 election campaign.
According to him, some people allegedly told the President to stop wearing the attire, claiming it was spiritually manipulated and could harm him, with rumours that Shettima intended to use it to gain political advantage.
Shettima explained that the clothing was originally given to help Tinubu blend in during northern campaign visits and was well received at the time.
He added that the President later confronted him after being approached by individuals spreading the allegations, but Tinubu dismissed the claims after realising he had worn similar outfits even before becoming President.
The Vice President said Tinubu eventually wore the outfits again for a period to prove there was no truth to the rumours.
Shettima described the incident as one of several “political gimmicks” used to create division in leadership circles, but insisted it did not affect their relationship.
Reflecting on national unity while referencing Gowon’s leadership, Shettima praised the former military ruler’s legacy, saying his tenure showed how trust and inclusiveness can strengthen the country.
He also highlighted Gowon’s role in the formation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), describing it as a major step toward regional cooperation in security, diplomacy, and economic development.
According to him, West Africa’s current challenges require deeper collaboration among countries to promote stability, opportunity, and peace across the region.
