Popular Nigerian disc jockey, DJ Obi, has said that Skepta deserves more recognition for his contribution to Afrobeats.
He recently shared that the British rapper has done more than enough to help Nigerian music cross over internationally.
Speaking on a recent podcast, DJ Obi revealed that Skepta’s efforts have gone a long way towards aiding the promotion of Afrobeats via his collaboration with Wizkid and other Nigerian artists.
Walking down memory lane, the disc jockey spoke about how Skepta featuring on “Ojuelegba remix” shifted the global perception of African music.
“Skepta did a lot for Afrobeats. I don’t think we give him his flowers and respect,” he said.
According to him, even if Nigerian singers were already making waves locally, certain foreign allies played a major role in opening the global door, and Skepta is one of those names many forget to recognize.
He then appreciated the lyricist for stepping up when Nigeria needed an international artist to push its sound beyond the shores of Africa.
“When there was need for help to cross over, certain people stood up. And Skepta was one of those people.
He looked around him and reached for whoever was closest to him. Thank God it was Wiz. They did their thing,” DJ Obi said.
He concluded by hailing Skepta for introducing Drake to Nigerian music, a gesture, he believes, led to the Canadian artist jumping on “Ojuelegba remix” alongside him.
“When Skepta said, listen to this and do this, it was a no-brainer. Boom. We’re in that room now. Drake is f**king with our sht,” he added.
