Twenty-year-old social media personality Habeeb Hamzat, known online as Peller, is in police custody following a disturbing incident in which he crashed his vehicle during a live broadcast on Sunday.
The Lagos State Police Command arrested the TikTok influencer after video footage showed him driving recklessly while streaming to his followers, culminating in a serious accident along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
According to police reports, Hamzat was alone in his newly acquired Mercedes-Benz when he appeared visibly distressed during the livestream. Witnesses say he was engaged in a phone conversation, allegedly with his girlfriend known as Jarvis, amid rumours of a relationship breakdown.
In troubling moments captured on camera, the influencer made alarming statements, including, “I will use this car and have an accident right now,” and “If you leave me, people will mock me… Thank you, I’m going to kill myself.”
The broadcast ended when Hamzat drove his vehicle into a stone barrier, causing substantial damage. He was taken to a hospital for treatment following the crash.
Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation. The suspect will face charges in court once the investigation concludes.
“His action constitutes a deliberate attempt to commit suicide and endanger the lives of other innocent people,” Adebisi stated in a Tuesday announcement.
Lagos Police Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh issued a stern warning to social media influencers and content creators, emphasising that the command will not tolerate the use of digital platforms to promote dangerous or unlawful behaviour that threatens public safety.
Authorities are urging all road users to comply with traffic regulations as they continue efforts to maintain peace and security throughout Lagos State.
