Spanish authorities in the North African enclave of Ceuta have declared a humanitarian emergency after thousands of migrants crossed into the territory from neighbouring Morocco, overwhelming local reception facilities.
According to Spain’s national broadcaster, TVE, between 2,000 and 3,000 migrants entered Ceuta on Thursday, July 30. The Spanish state news agency, Efe, also reported that some migrants breached the enclave by climbing the high border fence separating Ceuta from Morocco.
Local officials said the majority of the migrants reached the Spanish territory by swimming from the Moroccan coast, particularly through the Tarajal breakwater area and other sections along the border barriers.
The unexpected influx has placed significant pressure on Ceuta’s reception centres, prompting authorities to activate emergency humanitarian measures to manage the situation and provide assistance to the new arrivals.
Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on the northern coast of Africa, has long been a key migration route for people attempting to reach Europe from the African continent. The latest wave of arrivals is among the largest recorded in recent months, raising concerns over border management and humanitarian support in the territory.
