Former Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters, Hon. Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila has stressed the need for the establishment of state police saying this will enable the country to fully address the myriad of security situations bedeviling it.
He noted that Nigeria’s security system is failing over the time, saying that the system is not in tandem with the need and desires of the people.
According to him, “For instance in a country with heterogenous nature like Nigeria, federal system as we claim to be with over 200 million people with one Inspector General of Police, it is difficult for him to Police Nigeria.”
However, Hon Sumaila stated that ‘whether we like it or not, we need to have a second look at the policing system of the country.”
He added that calling for state police is imperative considering the growth of Nigeria’s population, inadequate number of police personnel and rising rate of crime and criminality in society.
His words; “I’m 100% in support of state police. We need to have a state police. Take Kano State for example we are almost 20 million and the total number of police in kano is less than 8,000 and from my own local government we have two divisions and the policemen there is less than 80 personnel with a population of almost 500,000.”
Hon Sumaila, who is a Senatorial Candidate for Kano South on the platform of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP) also disclosed his determination if elected to pursue his dream of addressing a series of lacunas in Nigeria’s Constitution.
According to him, “if I become the senator of the federal republic of Nigeria, I will insist to have a complete and comprehensive look at the constitution.”
