Suspected terrorists, believed to be armed bandits, have attacked Eggi Oyo-Ipo Community in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, abducting a businessman and an Islamic cleric while demanding a ₦65 million ransom for their release.
The late-night attack occurred on Wednesday when the heavily armed assailants invaded the community, causing panic among residents before forcefully taking the two victims away.
According to community sources, the kidnappers have already contacted residents and demanded ₦50 million for the release of the businessman and ₦15 million for the Islamic cleric.
“They have reached out to the community, demanding ₦50 million for the man they took and ₦15 million for the Alfa,” a source disclosed.
Another resident explained that the abducted businessman operates a business centre in Buari but resides in Eggi Oyo-Ipo.
According to the source, the attackers tracked him to his residence before abducting him alongside the Islamic cleric.
“The man runs a business centre in Buari but lives in Eggi Oyo-Ipo. He was traced to his home on Wednesday night and kidnapped together with one Mallam,” the source said.
The incident has reportedly been reported to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ajasse-Ipo, with security agencies expected to launch efforts to rescue the victims and apprehend the attackers.
The latest abduction comes amid growing insecurity across Kwara South, where communities have continued to experience repeated attacks by suspected terrorists and armed bandits.
Just hours before the Eggi Oyo-Ipo incident, another armed attack was reported in Wande Community, Ifelodun Local Government Area, where gunmen allegedly killed one resident, abducted another person, and injured several others.
Residents of Wande described the assault as a night of terror, saying the attackers stormed the community shooting indiscriminately and assaulting villagers before fleeing with one abducted victim.
One of the injured victims narrated his ordeal, revealing that he was struck on the head with the butt of a rifle.
“They hit me on the head with the butt of their gun, and I sustained serious injuries. The person they shot was being rushed to a hospital in Igbaja,” the victim said.
The successive attacks have heightened fears among residents of Kwara South, with many calling on the federal and state governments, as well as security agencies, to intensify efforts to tackle the rising wave of kidnappings and terrorist activities in the region.
