Atiku Slams Tinubu Over Silence After Oyo Schoolchildren Rescue

The family of Michael Oyedokun, the schoolteacher murdered by his abductors while in captivity, says their grief remains fresh even as the remaining victims of the May 15 Oyo school abductions return home. Oyedokun was among the teachers seized by gunmen from Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, in Oriire Local Government Area, before he was killed during captivity. The other 44 victims regained freedom on Friday after 56 days in captivity, following a joint rescue operation by the military, the Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Police Force. Reacting on Instagram, Oluwabukolami, who identified Oyedokun as her uncle, said the family was happy for other reunited families but remained devastated by their own loss. "They are finally home. My heart rejoices with every family that has been reunited with their loved ones after weeks of pain, fear and uncertainty. Welcome home," she wrote. "But as others celebrate, my family mourns. "My uncle, Mr Michael Olugbade Oyedokun, will never come home. "He was taken from us, and his life was brutally cut short. Our joy is incomplete because one chair at our table will remain empty forever. "Today, we celebrate those who returned while remembering the one who never did. Rest in peace, Uncle Michael. You will never be forgotten." The gunmen struck on May 15, attacking Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and LA Primary School, Ogbomoso — all in Oriire Local Government Area.

‘Oh, to be young, gifted, and Black!’ goes the famous American Negro spiritual. But in the case of Dame Dr. Adaora Remy Umeoji, OON, we might say: ‘Oh, to be young, gifted, Nigerian, and female!’

Dr. Umeoji’s appointment as Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Plc in June this year marked a milestone, not just for her but for Nigeria’s financial sector and Corporate Nigeria. She is the first woman to hold this prestigious position in the history of Zenith Bank, and her rise has been celebrated as both historic and empowering, showcasing the power of diversity, inclusion, and gender equity. With her ascension to the “zenith” (if you’ll pardon the pun) of one of Nigeria’s leading banks, Umeoji joins an elite league of exceptional women who have recently risen to top leadership positions in banking, including Yemisi Edun of First City Monument Bank (FCMB); Miriam Olusanya of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB); Bukola Smith of FSDH Merchant Bank; Oluwatomi Ayodele Somefun of Unity Bank; Bolaji Agbede of Access Holdings Plc; Yetunde Bolanle Oni of Union Bank; Halima Buba of SunTrust Bank; Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe of Fidelity Bank; and Kafilat Araoye of Lotus Bank.

Dr. Adaora Umeoji’s journey to the top is the result of consistent hard work, commitment, and self-belief. Before her appointment as GMD/CEO, Umeoji served as Deputy Managing Director of Zenith Bank, building on almost three decades of banking experience, with over 25 years dedicated to Zenith Bank Plc. Over the years, she has become a trusted figure among the bank’s stakeholders and decision-makers, representing the core values, business model, and philosophy that have made Zenith Bank the powerhouse it is today. Under her leadership, Zenith Bank continues to strengthen its presence across Nigeria, West Africa, and beyond, with operations extending to Ghana, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the UAE, and China. With over $16.5 billion in total assets and $854 million in shareholder equity as of April 2024, the bank is listed on both the Nigerian and London Stock Exchanges.

Zenith Bank, founded by renowned banker and entrepreneur Dr. Jim Ovia 34 years ago, was part of a wave of new generation banks that transformed Nigeria’s banking sector, challenging the dominance of older institutions like Union Bank, First Bank, UBA, and Afribank. From its early days, the bank has grown exponentially, leveraging technology and innovation to stay ahead of its competition. Zenith Bank has been a leader in digital banking since 1999, and today, it continues to prioritize data-driven operations, reducing the need for human interaction in favor of more seamless, tech-enabled services.

Dr. Umeoji’s leadership not only reflects Zenith Bank’s forward-thinking approach but also her own commitment to staying at the forefront of industry advancements. Born on February 8, 1976, Umeoji holds a B.Sc in Sociology from the University of Jos and another B.Sc in Accounting from Baze University, Abuja. She completed the Advanced Management Program (AMP) at Harvard Business School and earned a Master of Laws degree from the University of Salford in the UK, an MBA from the University of Calabar, and a Doctorate in Business Administration from Apollos University, Montana, USA. Umeoji is also a certified graduate of the Columbia Business School’s Global Banking Programme and holds various certificates from prestigious institutions, including MIT’s Sloan School of Management and Wharton Business School.

A fellow of numerous professional bodies, including the Chartered Bankers Institute (UK) and the Nigerian Institute of Management, Dr. Umeoji has been on Zenith Bank’s board since 2012. Her appointment as the bank’s first female GMD/CEO aligns with Zenith’s tradition of grooming leaders from within and maintaining a robust succession plan.

Beyond the banking halls, Dr. Umeoji has defied traditional stereotypes, engaging in humanitarian work and advocating for peace through the United Nations Police Assistance and Capacity-Building (UN-POLAC). In recognition of her contributions, she was awarded the national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in 2022 and named the ‘Humanitarian Services Icon of the Year’ at The Sun Awards in 2023 for her dedication to cancer patients through the Pink Breathe Cancer Foundation and for her work with indigent children through the Adorable Foundation. A devout Catholic, Umeoji is also the founder of the Catholic Bankers Association of Nigeria (CBAN) and has been recognized with a Papal Knighthood by Pope Francis I.

Zenith Bank’s tagline, ‘In Your Best Interest,’ has never seemed more fitting. Under the leadership of Dame (Dr.) Adaora Remy Umeoji, OON, the bank and the wider financial sector can look forward to new horizons of growth, innovation, and social impact.
