Three police officers lost their lives on Sunday when an improvised explosive device detonated during a clearance operation along the Anka–Bagega Road in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The explosion occurred at about 5:05 p.m. on June 15, according to security sources cited by counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama.
The officers were part of a team led by SP Abdulrazak Musa Hassan, Officer in Charge of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, who had been deployed to neutralise a suspected device allegedly planted by bandits in the area.
The team, which also included operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), was carrying out a controlled clearance exercise using an armoured personnel carrier when the vehicle accidentally triggered the explosive, according to the report.
The blast killed all three officers instantly: SP Abdulrazak Musa Hassan, Inspector Murtala Musa of the VCRU, and Inspector Auwal Ahmad of the EOD unit.
Their remains were evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Gusau, for post-mortem examination and have since been deposited in the hospital’s morgue. Authorities are continuing investigations into the incident.
