President Bola Tinubu has acknowledged the hardship Nigerians are facing due to his administration’s economic reforms, revealing that he too has lost weight and sleep while trying to fix the nation’s challenges.
Tinubu made the remarks on Saturday at the Bola Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja shortly after emerging victorious in the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary election with a total of 10,999,162 votes.
Addressing party leaders and supporters, the president said the reforms introduced by his government over the past three years were necessary to rebuild a nation he described as being in a difficult condition when he assumed office.
According to him, the sacrifices being experienced by citizens are not lost on him, stressing that he personally understands the pain and pressure that come with the ongoing reforms.
He said, “I know what it takes to reform this nation we met in tatters. If you have lost sleep, I have lost sleep too. If you have lost weight, I have also lost weight.
“But I asked for this job in 2022, and with your support, I got it. That means I must remain committed to doing the work.”
Tinubu also praised the conduct of the APC presidential primary, describing the exercise as peaceful and free from violence or political rancour.
The president recalled monitoring the exercise on television after casting his vote, saying he was encouraged by the massive turnout of party members across different parts of the country, including Kano, Kaduna, and Calabar.
He noted that the absence of violence during the process reflected the kind of democratic culture Nigeria should embrace.
“It was encouraging to see people participate peacefully without bloodshed or conflict. This is the kind of politics we want for Nigeria,” he stated.
Tinubu defeated his only challenger, Stanley Osifo, who secured 16,503 votes in the direct primary election conducted across the country’s 774 local government areas and 8,809 wards.
