President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, granting pay increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent across different ranks in a move aimed at improving troop welfare and boosting morale.

The salary adjustment, which will take effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit approximately 250,000 military personnel nationwide.

According to a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, officers above the rank of Colonel—including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals, and Generals—will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.

Personnel from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while soldiers from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.

The new remuneration package will raise the Federal Government’s annual wage bill for military personnel from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.

President Tinubu said the salary review reflects his administration’s commitment to recognising the sacrifices and dedication of members of the Armed Forces, particularly as they continue to tackle insecurity, terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping across the country.

He noted that military personnel who risk their lives daily to protect Nigerians deserve improved welfare and continuous government support.

“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President stated.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising troop welfare while modernising the Armed Forces through the provision of advanced weapons, equipment, and technology needed to effectively carry out their responsibilities.

Tinubu stressed that national security remains a cornerstone of his administration’s agenda, adding that government will continue to deploy all available military and law enforcement resources to combat security threats and safeguard lives and property.

He also urged military personnel to view the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their service and sacrifice.

“I urge our servicemen to take this gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation for the services they render to our fatherland. Together, we shall prevail over those determined to undermine the peace and unity of our nation,” the President said.
