President Bola Tinubu has appealed to the leadership of the 10th Senate to initiate amendments to the Nigerian Constitution that would pave the way for the establishment of state police across the country.
The president made this call during an interfaith breakfast meeting with senators held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, according to a statement released by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
Tinubu described the creation of state police as a matter of growing urgency, citing the need to tackle mounting security threats across the nation. He argued that decentralising policing powers would bolster security at the grassroots level and enable faster responses to local threats.
“We are facing terrorism, banditry and insurgency,” the president said, adding that he was confident the country would rise to meet these challenges. He urged senators to begin deliberating on the best approach to embedding state policing into the constitution.
Tinubu said the reform would help reclaim forests from criminal elements and restore a sense of safety to ordinary Nigerians. He also praised the working relationship between the executive branch and the National Assembly, describing their collaboration as essential to national progress.
The president expressed gratitude to the Senate for its support of his administration’s economic agenda, noting that key reforms — including the removal of the fuel subsidy — would not have been possible without legislative backing. He credited those reforms with ending what he called widespread corruption and foreign exchange manipulation, and expressed optimism about the country’s economic trajectory.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended Tinubu for convening the interfaith gathering and noted that the administration’s reforms had boosted revenue flows to state governments, enabling greater investment in infrastructure.
