President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on his 70th birthday, describing him as an influential figure and a progressive politician who has made significant contributions to Nigeria’s political development.
Kwankwaso celebrated his 70th birthday on October 21, 2026.
In a statement personally signed by the President on Wednesday, Tinubu reflected on their longstanding relationship, which dates back to 1992 when both men served in the National Assembly.
While Kwankwaso represented Kano State in the House of Representatives, Tinubu served as a senator. Their political relationship continued in 1999 when both men became governors of their respective states.
Tinubu described Kwankwaso as a respected political figure who has played several important roles in the country, including serving as a two-term governor of Kano State, Minister of Defence, senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District, presidential candidate and vice-presidential candidate.
The President also recalled how their political paths diverged at different times before they reunited in 2013 to establish the All Progressives Congress (APC), alongside other political leaders.
Despite their current political differences, Tinubu maintained that his personal affection for Kwankwaso remains unchanged.
He noted that both politicians now belong to different political parties and are competing on separate platforms ahead of the January 2027 presidential election.
Tinubu said their political disagreements would not erase the friendship and mutual respect they had built over the years.
“Senator Kwankwaso remains an influential figure and a progressive politician,” the President stated.
He added that their membership of different political parties would not diminish his affection for the former Kano governor.
The President wished Kwankwaso good health, personal fulfilment and many more years of active participation in Nigeria’s democratic process as he marks the milestone birthday.
Tinubu’s message highlights the longstanding relationship between the two politicians despite their differing political affiliations and ambitions ahead of the 2027 general election.
