President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday formally decorated Tunji Disu with the insignia of Acting Inspector-General of Police at the State House in Abuja, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.
The decoration followed Disu’s swearing-in and took place at approximately 3:00 p.m. during an expanded session attended by senior government and security officials. With the ceremony, the Lagos-born officer becomes Nigeria’s 23rd Inspector-General of Police at the age of 59.
Disu arrived at the Presidential Villa around 2:50 p.m. for both the ceremony and a brief meeting with the President. His appointment, which was approved by Tinubu on Tuesday, came on the heels of the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun, whose departure was confirmed the same day.
The appointment takes immediate effect but remains subject to Senate confirmation as required under the Police Act 2020. A sitting of the Nigeria Police Council is also expected to formally consider his nomination for substantive appointment to the role.
Prior to his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police at the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos. His career has spanned key postings including Commissioner of Police in both Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory, as well as the leadership of the Intelligence Response Team, through which he oversaw several high-profile operations. He is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
His appointment is notably timed just 48 days before his mandatory retirement, which is triggered either at age 60 or upon completing 35 years of service under existing police regulations. The elevation also falls within the framework of the 2024 amendment to the Police Act, which introduced a fixed four-year tenure for holders of the Inspector-General position.
