President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Romuald Wadagni on his election victory in the Republic of Benin, pledging Nigeria’s full cooperation as the president-elect prepares to take office.
Wadagni, who currently serves as Benin’s Finance Minister, secured a commanding win in the April 12 presidential election, positioning him to become his country’s next head of state.
In a statement issued Thursday, Tinubu described the outcome as a reflection of the trust Benin’s citizens have placed in Wadagni, citing his track record in government as a key factor in his electoral success. The Nigerian president also commended the smooth and peaceful manner in which the election was conducted.
Tinubu used the occasion to highlight the deep-rooted ties between Nigeria and Benin — two neighbouring nations bound by shared history, culture, and decades of bilateral cooperation. He said Nigeria stands ready to deepen that relationship under the incoming administration.
Beyond diplomacy, Tinubu signalled interest in strengthening collaboration on regional security and economic development, particularly through the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union.
The president assured Wadagni of Nigeria’s unwavering support as he transitions into one of the most demanding roles in public life, expressing confidence that both nations can build a stronger partnership for the benefit of West Africa as a whole.
