President Bola Tinubu has assured members of the House of Representatives of his backing for their return to the National Assembly in the 2027 elections, while also reaffirming his commitment to establishing State Police as part of his broader security agenda.
Tinubu made the pledge during an interfaith breaking of fast hosted at the State House for House members, acknowledging that while some constituencies operate rotational arrangements for their representatives, he would “do everything within the party’s powers” to ensure the current crop of lawmakers secures another term.
The assurance mirrors a similar meeting he had earlier held with Senate members, signaling a deliberate effort to consolidate legislative support ahead of the next election cycle.
Speaking at the event, the President expressed confidence in Nigeria’s economic trajectory, crediting the cooperation of lawmakers for the country’s gradual stabilization following the removal of fuel subsidies — a policy that initially triggered widespread public anxiety.
“It was initially very difficult for many to understand the direction of my thinking, but I am glad we are out of the dark tunnel,” Tinubu said, adding that the tension that once surrounded his economic reforms had since subsided.
House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who addressed the gathering before the President, used the occasion to appeal for Tinubu’s active support in ensuring legislative continuity, warning that the high turnover of National Assembly members after elections — sometimes as much as 80% — weakens institutional memory and forces incoming lawmakers through lengthy learning curves before they can function effectively.
Abbas also praised Tinubu’s leadership, noting a remarkable shift in how members across party lines now view the administration’s policies. “This is the first time that every member here, whether in the majority or minority, believes in what you are doing,” he said, describing the improving economic indicators — including declining inflation and rising agricultural activity — as validation of the President’s vision.
The Speaker further noted the symbolic significance of Ramadan and Lent coinciding this year, describing the interfaith gathering as a fitting reflection of the national unity the administration seeks to project.
