The management of the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex Management Board (LITFCMB) has declared zero tolerance for the production and distribution of counterfeit and substandard products within its facility following the arrest of two persons allegedly involved in the illegal revalidation of expired drinks and the production of fake consumables.
The Board condemned the use of the complex for activities that pose serious risks to public health, stressing that the facility was established to promote legitimate trade, ethical business practices and genuine commercial activities.
In a statement made available to Vanguard on Wednesday, the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of LITFCMB, Veronica Ndanusa, disclosed that relevant authorities had commenced investigations into the incident to ensure that such activities do not recur.
Ndanusa warned that individuals or businesses found engaging in practices that endanger public health or undermine local manufacturing would face the full consequences of the law.
She stated that the Board remained committed to transparency, accountability and ethical business operations, adding that the complex would not be allowed to become a centre for the production or distribution of fake and substandard goods.
According to her, the facility was established to provide a conducive environment for legitimate businesses to grow and contribute to the economy, rather than serve as a base for activities that could put consumers at risk.
The LITFCMB chief executive also commended the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for its enforcement operation, which led to the arrest of the suspects allegedly linked to the illegal activities.
She assured the public that the Board would strengthen its collaboration with NAFDAC and other relevant regulatory and law enforcement agencies to identify and eliminate illegal businesses operating within the complex.
Ndanusa further urged traders, manufacturers and other business operators within the facility to comply with established regulations and maintain acceptable standards in their operations.
She emphasised that the pursuit of profit must never take precedence over the health and safety of consumers, warning business owners against engaging in practices that could expose the public to dangerous products.
The Board reiterated its determination to protect the reputation and integrity of the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex as one of the country’s major commercial hubs.
It also reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards the production, revalidation, sale or distribution of counterfeit and substandard products, stressing that such activities could undermine public confidence in locally manufactured goods and legitimate businesses.
