For 19-year-old Annabel, a dream of becoming a nurse nearly ended in tragedy after she was trafficked from Delta State to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, where she was allegedly forced into prostitution.

But after escaping the situation and being found stranded on the streets of Abidjan, Annabel has returned home to Ovwiamuge, Agbarho, in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, where she has been reunited with her parents and given fresh hope of returning to school.

How Annabel was found

Annabel’s ordeal came to public attention after a video of her encounter with an unidentified interviewer in Abidjan went viral on social media.

During the encounter, the young woman identified herself as Annabel and said she was from Delta State, specifically Ovwiamuge. She also disclosed that both her parents were alive and still in Nigeria.

However, she revealed that her parents had no knowledge that she had travelled to Côte d’Ivoire.

When asked about the people who took her to the country, Annabel said she could identify the woman she referred to as her “Madam” and had her telephone number. She also knew the location where she had been taken, although she could not identify its name.

According to the narrator of the video, Annabel had been taken to Côte d’Ivoire under the impression that she would secure decent employment but was instead pushed into prostitution.

She reportedly refused to comply with the demands placed on her and was subsequently abandoned.

“I was told I was coming to earn from a decent job,” Annabel said.

The video generated widespread concern, with calls for members of the public to share it and help locate her family.

Intervention brings her home

The social media appeal eventually sparked a chain of interventions that led to Annabel’s return to Nigeria.

Among those who played a major role in facilitating her homecoming was Stella Okotete, Executive Director of Business Development at the Nigerian Export-Import Bank, through her Erhuvwuoghene Girl Child Right Foundation.

Okotete said the rescue was only the beginning, stressing that Annabel needed support to recover from the experience, reintegrate into her community and rebuild her future.

“Thank God, Annabel has returned home safely. Her joyful homecoming is a moment of relief, gratitude and hope for all of us,” she said.

She also used the incident to warn parents and communities about the dangers of human trafficking, particularly the vulnerability of young girls.

According to her, parents and guardians must pay closer attention to the safety and welfare of their children.

“Human trafficking remains a grave threat to our communities. We must remain vigilant, educate our children, speak up against suspicious activities, and work together to protect every child from exploitation,” Okotete said.

Annabel wants to become a nurse

With Annabel safely back home, attention has now shifted to helping her resume her education.

The teenager has expressed a strong desire to return to school and pursue her ambition of becoming a nurse.

Her ambition has received the backing of the Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Area, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, who received Annabel from Okotete.

Egbo expressed happiness over her return and promised that efforts would be made to ensure she resumes her education.

“I am overjoyed that our daughter, Annabel, is back,” he said.

According to him, the response to Annabel’s ordeal showed the importance of collective responsibility in protecting vulnerable members of society.

“We are going to get her back to school. She wants to be a nurse so that she can also take care of others,” Egbo said.

He also urged parents to be more vigilant about their children and the people who approach them with promises of jobs or opportunities outside their communities.

“I call on other people elsewhere… parents should be very, very mindful of their children,” he added.

Community welcomes her home

Annabel’s return was greeted with excitement in Ovwiamuge, where she was reunited with her parents and welcomed by members of the community.

Following her return, arrangements were made for her to undergo medical examinations and receive the necessary assistance to help her reintegrate into normal life.

Okotete assured the family and community that her foundation would continue to support the teenager.

“We’ll try our best to integrate her back into society and give her all necessary support,” she said.

A warning against human trafficking

Annabel’s experience has also renewed concerns about the dangers faced by young Nigerians who are lured away from their communities with promises of employment and better opportunities.

Her case highlights how trafficking can begin with seemingly attractive offers before victims find themselves trapped in situations they never anticipated.

In Annabel’s case, what was presented to her as an opportunity to earn a living reportedly ended with her being taken to a foreign country and pressured into prostitution.

Her refusal to comply eventually left her stranded, until her chance encounter with the interviewer brought her situation to public attention.

The successful intervention also demonstrated the role that social media, community leaders, individuals and organisations can play in helping vulnerable people in distress.

For Okotete, however, the ultimate goal should be preventing similar cases from happening in the first place.

“Together, we can fight human trafficking, safeguard our daughters, and build a future where every girl is free to dream, grow, and achieve her full potential,” she said.

For Annabel, the journey ahead is now one of rebuilding.

After escaping a foreign environment where her future was threatened, the teenager is looking forward to returning to the classroom and pursuing the career she has always wanted.

Her dream is simple: to become a nurse and one day use her profession to care for others.
