Troops of Sector 2 under Operation Hadin Kai have successfully neutralised 24 terrorists while foiling a coordinated attack on Kukareta community in Borno State.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the assault occurred around midnight and lasted until about 3 a.m. on Thursday, with soldiers engaging the attackers in an intense exchange of gunfire.
The troops were said to have overwhelmed the insurgents, inflicting heavy losses and forcing the surviving fighters to retreat.
After the clash, the military recovered a large cache of weapons abandoned by the fleeing terrorists. The items include 18 AK-47 rifles, three General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), two PKT anti-aircraft guns, three Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) launchers, two mortar tubes, four hand grenades, and 18 AK-47 magazines.
Officials also confirmed the recovery of a substantial quantity of 7.62mm belted ammunition used for anti-aircraft operations.
Two soldiers sustained gunshot injuries during the firefight and are currently receiving treatment.
The successful defence of Kukareta has been described as a significant operational achievement, underscoring the continued effectiveness of troops in ongoing counter-insurgency operations in Nigeria’s North-East, where efforts to dismantle terrorist networks remain active.
