A Lagos State High Court has sentenced truck driver Okpara Kingsley Onyekachi to life imprisonment for killing a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) marshal during a traffic enforcement operation.
The FRSC announced the verdict in a statement by Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, Corps Public Education Officer, issued from the agency’s Abuja headquarters on February 5, 2026.
Justice was delivered on January 14, 2026, by the High Court of Lagos State (TBS Division) in Suit No. LD/24692C/2024 – The State v. Okpara Kingsley Onyekachi.
The fatal incident occurred on November 16, 2023, at Orile-Iganmu, Lagos State, during routine traffic enforcement by an FRSC patrol team.
Investigations showed that Onyekachi was driving a 40-foot container truck at excessive speed when he crashed into a stationary mini truck that had been stopped for inspection. The collision killed Deputy Chief Road Marshal Assistant Ajomale, who was performing his official duties at the scene.
The court found the driver’s actions to be grossly negligent, reckless, and unlawful. It dismissed any suggestion that the crash was accidental and convicted him of involuntary manslaughter under the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed said the ruling “sends a loud, unmistakable message to all drivers, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles, that recklessness on our roads will no longer be tolerated.”
He emphasized that the FRSC will continue pursuing justice for fallen officers and innocent road users, warning that drivers who endanger lives through negligence should expect severe legal consequences.
The Corps Marshal added that the agency will intensify enforcement and stakeholder collaboration to address dangerous driving behaviors across Nigeria.
The FRSC paid tribute to DCRM Ajomale, describing his death as “a solemn reminder of the risks faced daily by road safety personnel in the line of duty.”
