United States President Donald Trump has reaffirmed America’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in its fight against terrorism, while praising President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to tackle the country’s security and governance challenges.
In a letter dated July 6, 2026, Trump described the relationship between the United States and Nigeria as increasingly important, particularly as both countries work together to confront terrorism and strengthen regional security. He commended Tinubu’s determination to address violence across the country, especially attacks affecting Christian communities.
According to Trump, it is an honour for the United States to partner with Nigeria in combating terrorism and helping to build a safer and more prosperous nation.
The US President highlighted the growing defence cooperation between both countries, noting that the 2026 US-Nigeria Defence Cooperation Roadmap has provided a framework for intelligence sharing, military training and joint operations against terrorist groups.
He also disclosed that elite United States Special Operations Forces have been deployed to assist Nigerian security personnel with training, intelligence and operational support to improve their capacity to protect citizens and tackle insurgency.
Trump’s message comes amid renewed assurances from the US government that it will continue global counter-terrorism efforts despite the persistent threat posed by jihadist groups operating in countries such as Nigeria, Somalia and Syria.
Speaking after a ministerial meeting on terrorism held in Washington, Ambassador Gregory D. LoGerfo, the US Coordinator and Ambassador-at-Large for Counterterrorism, said extremist groups remain a major security concern worldwide.
He explained that Washington would continue working with international partners through diplomacy, intelligence sharing, financial sanctions and military cooperation to weaken terrorist organisations before they can carry out attacks.
LoGerfo also disclosed that participating countries agreed to strengthen intelligence collaboration, tighten travel restrictions on suspected terrorists and improve the protection of critical infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s military recorded another success in its ongoing offensive against insurgents under Operation HADIN KAI.
Military authorities confirmed that more than 20 ISWAP fighters were killed in a precision drone strike carried out at Kila Bariya in the Southern Lake Chad region on July 21. The operation also destroyed a major terrorist logistics base, including over 30 motorcycles and a large food storage facility believed to have been stocked with supplies taken from farming communities.
The military further confirmed the death of Abu Salim al-Barnawi, an ISWAP propaganda operative and former raid commander, alongside other members of the group’s media team during a failed attack in Borno State earlier this month.
According to Operation HADIN KAI, the elimination of the media operatives has dealt another major setback to the terrorist group’s propaganda network and operational capacity, further weakening its ability to recruit fighters and coordinate attacks.
