Minister of Works, David Umahi, has revealed that the current administration took over road project liabilities exceeding N14 trillion, along with 2,068 ongoing projects nationwide as of May 2023.
Umahi disclosed this on Monday during an inspection of the Enugu–Abakaliki Expressway, noting that despite the heavy financial burden, the government has sustained efforts to advance critical infrastructure projects across the country.
He said notable progress has been recorded in reducing road infrastructure gaps, with several key projects approaching completion. According to him, the Ekeobinagu Flyover in Enugu is about 99 percent complete and is expected to be commissioned in May.
The minister described the flyover as a major solution to persistent traffic congestion in the area, adding that it reflects the growing capacity of local contractors.
“We used to spend hours in traffic there, but the situation has improved significantly with the progress made. It is a landmark project executed by indigenous contractors,” he said.
On the flyover under construction at the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army/Abakpa junction, Umahi explained that 15 out of the required 40 piles have been completed, with work still ongoing.
He, however, acknowledged funding challenges affecting some projects, noting that delays in payments to contractors have slowed progress in certain areas. He added that President Bola Tinubu has directed the release of funds to speed up construction.
“I won’t fault the contractors because timely payment is key. Once funds are disbursed, the pace of work will improve,” he said.
Umahi reiterated the administration’s commitment to upgrading road infrastructure nationwide, expressing confidence that ongoing projects will ease transportation challenges and improve connectivity across the country.
“While not all projects can be completed immediately, we remain focused on delivering durable roads and bridges for Nigerians,” he added.
