Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has called on opposition parties to unite behind the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu made the call in a post on her X handle on Wednesday, arguing that unifying behind Obi does not amount to surrender but a strategy to unseat the incumbent administration.
She said the 2027 election would not be won by the party with the loudest supporters, but by the side that learns to come together, adding that Obi is not the candidate of a single camp but the contender with the strongest record on the ballot.
The activist noted that President Bola Tinubu won the 2023 election with 36 per cent of the votes, while the opposition collectively took the rest, insisting that the numbers have always favoured the opposition, not the ruling party.
She urged the fractured opposition to form a formidable coalition, lamenting the divisions that have persisted among the parties.
“Peter Obi is not the candidate of one camp. Unifying under him is not surrender. It is strategy. And unifying does not mean dissolving your party, your platform, or your principles,” she wrote.
The BringBackOurGirls Movement co-convener added that a coordination channel exists for party operatives, organisers, fundraisers, and strategists within opposition parties.
“Not to replace what you are doing, but to connect it. We have to be unified by something stronger,” she said.
