The United States government has commenced enforcement of a new visa restriction policy targeting individuals implicated in religious freedom abuses in Nigeria.
This was confirmed by Mark Walker, who revealed that the measure is already in effect. He disclosed this in a post shared on X on Friday.
Walker explained that those found to be involved in religious persecution will face heightened screening and may be denied entry into the United States.
“We have already implemented this policy and will continue to subject offenders to stricter scrutiny,” he stated, stressing that individuals responsible for such violations would not be welcomed into the country.
He reiterated Washington’s stance, noting that barring alleged perpetrators from entering the US is part of efforts to safeguard national security.
The policy was initially announced in December by US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. According to him, the restrictions are aimed at individuals who knowingly direct, support, or carry out acts that infringe on religious freedom.
Rubio said the move forms part of a broader response to reported violence against Christians in Nigeria and other parts of the world.
The decision followed a resolution introduced by Chris Smith, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa. The resolution recommended visa bans and financial sanctions against persons and groups accused of severe religious rights violations.
Among those mentioned were the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, which were alleged to have links to such abuses.
In addition, some US lawmakers had earlier proposed sanctions against Rabiu Kwankwaso over alleged involvement in religious freedom violations.
However, Walker did not disclose specific individuals or organisations currently affected by the newly enforced visa restrictions.
