The United States Embassy in Nigeria has reminded American citizens who hold dual nationality that they must use a valid U.S. passport whenever they enter or leave the United States.
In a travel advisory shared on its official X account on Sunday, the embassy stressed that the rule applies to every U.S. citizen, including children, regardless of whether they also possess citizenship of another country.
The embassy also cautioned dual nationals against using their foreign passports to apply for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). It explained that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) routinely rejects or cancels ESTA applications submitted by American citizens using passports issued by another country.
According to the advisory, all U.S. citizens are legally required to travel into and out of the United States with a valid American passport.
The embassy further encouraged Americans living abroad to check the validity of their passports well before making international travel plans. Those with expired passports or documents nearing expiration were advised to begin the renewal process early to avoid travel disruptions.
It also reminded travelers that entry requirements differ from one country to another, noting that many destinations require passports to remain valid for at least six months beyond the intended date of arrival.
The embassy urged U.S. citizens to verify the passport validity requirements of their destination countries before traveling to ensure a smooth journey.
