Veteran Nollywood actor, dramatist, filmmaker, and academic, Dr. Kola Oyewo, has passed away at the age of 80.
The news of his death was announced on Friday by fellow actor and filmmaker Kunle Afod through a post on Instagram, where he paid tribute to the late theatre legend.
Afod wrote that Oyewo had “taken his final bow,” describing him as a remarkable talent whose immense contributions to Nigeria’s theatre and film industries would never be forgotten. He added that the veteran actor’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Dr. Oyewo began his acting journey in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group, laying the foundation for a career that would span more than six decades.
Over the years, he became one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre and Nigerian cinema. He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Odewale in Ola Rotimi’s acclaimed play, The Gods Are Not to Blame, a performance that earned him admiration across Africa’s theatre community.
Throughout his illustrious career, Oyewo appeared in several notable productions, including Saworoide, Sango, Koseegbe, Super Story, and numerous Yoruba-language films that contributed significantly to the growth and popularity of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Beyond acting, Dr. Oyewo distinguished himself in academia. He earned a doctorate in Drama from the University of Ibadan and taught at several institutions, including Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University, and Elizade University.
As a lecturer, mentor, and researcher, he played a vital role in nurturing generations of actors, playwrights, and scholars, leaving an enduring impact on both the creative and academic worlds.
His passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian theatre and film, but his contributions and influence will continue to resonate for years to come.
