A fresh call has been made for Nigerian health regulators, including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), to independently investigate quality control claims involving KissKids baby diapers following allegations raised in a viral TikTok video.
The renewed appeal comes after a Nigerian mother posted a video on TikTok alleging that she discovered a black foreign material inside a KissKids baby diaper after using 36 diapers from a pack of 40. In the video, she expressed concern that the object could have posed a potential health risk to infants had it gone unnoticed.
The video quickly gained traction across social media, triggering widespread conversations among parents and consumers about product safety and manufacturing standards for infant care products.
Days later, the woman deleted the original post and uploaded another video explaining that representatives of the company had reached out to her, addressed her complaint and provided replacement products. She also commended the company’s customer service and responsiveness.
However, there is no publicly available evidence explaining why the initial video was removed beyond the woman’s own account. Likewise, allegations circulating online that she was persuaded or compensated to take down the post remain unsubstantiated, with no verified evidence to support such claims.
Despite the resolution between the consumer and the manufacturer, observers insist that the underlying product safety concern warrants independent scrutiny.
Public affairs commentator Femi Omidiji stressed that regulatory agencies should not ignore concerns involving products intended for babies.
“The safety of infants should never be left to speculation,” he said. “Whenever questions arise about products that come into direct contact with babies’ skin, regulators have a duty to establish the facts through a prompt, transparent and independent investigation. Public confidence is best protected when concerns are addressed with evidence rather than assumptions.”
An email sent to KissKids seeking the company’s official response to the allegation had not been answered as of the time this report was filed.
Omidiji maintained that the responsibility now rests with Nigeria’s consumer protection and public health authorities to determine whether the reported incident was an isolated manufacturing defect, contamination during production or packaging, or whether the affected product complied with all applicable safety and quality standards.
“An independent investigation should not be interpreted as a declaration of guilt against the manufacturer,” he said. “Rather, it is a standard consumer protection measure designed to reassure the public that products intended for babies continue to meet the highest safety and quality standards.”
He noted that diapers remain in prolonged contact with an infant’s delicate skin and are used continuously throughout the day, making quality assurance indispensable.
“Quality control systems exist to prevent defective products from reaching consumers. Whenever questions arise about those systems, transparency becomes just as important as the investigation itself,” he added.
While commending the company’s decision to engage the customer and replace the affected products, Omidiji said effective customer service should complement—not replace—formal product safety reviews.
“Responding swiftly to consumer complaints reflects responsible corporate conduct. However, where allegations involve potential product defects, an independent quality assurance assessment remains essential to protect consumers and strengthen public confidence,” he said.
He further argued that the incident should serve as a reminder to every manufacturer of infant care products operating in Nigeria of the importance of strict production standards, comprehensive batch testing, product traceability and continuous quality assurance.
According to him, regulators should neither dismiss nor validate allegations circulating on social media without evidence. Instead, they should establish the facts through laboratory analysis, review of production records, factory inspections where necessary and examination of the product batch involved.
Such an approach, he said, would benefit both consumers and manufacturers. If investigations confirm that the product complies with all required safety standards, public confidence can be restored through verifiable findings. Conversely, if deficiencies are identified, timely corrective measures would help prevent future occurrences and strengthen consumer protection.
At the time of filing this report, no Nigerian regulatory agency had publicly announced the outcome of any investigation into the allegations contained in the TikTok videos. The claims therefore remain unverified.
Industry observers maintain that consumer confidence in infant care products should not depend on viral social media posts or online debates alone, but on effective regulatory oversight, robust quality control systems and transparent investigations whenever legitimate safety concerns are raised.
