Barcelona goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny, has revealed that he has accepted his smoking addiction.
Speaking during a recent interview with ESPN, the talented goalie said that even if he is open about the fact that he smokes regularly, he has never failed to add that it is a habit he is not proud of.
According to Szczesny, he created the bad habit when he was much younger, and he has been unable to stop it even as an adult, so he can only accept his reality and hope others will learn not to fall into the same trap he is currently in.
Wojciech believes he does all he can to be the best version of himself, and while there are certain sides to him that can be a good example for young fans out there, smoking is a specific part of his life he doesn’t want the younger generation to emulate.
“There are some parts of the game where I believe I can be a perfect example for young people or, in fact, for my teammates.
And there are some things in my career that you better not follow. In a few aspects, I fail at [being an example], but I try to be the best version of myself, and I try to give the correct example to my teammates, to young kids who watch us.
But mentioning the subject of smoking, please do not follow me and don’t do it. I’ve lost the fight. When I was very young, I created a habit that is very negative for me, and I know it is. I just lose against it. So for anybody watching: Don’t do what I did,” he said.
Szczesny said he is not scared to touch on his smoking addiction because he is just a goalkeeper, and not a politician. The GK also believes that it will be much easier to keep up with your previous interviews if you just make up your mind to be honest with every question asked.
According to him, while he would prefer not to be asked questions about a habit he struggles with, he never hesitates to tell it as it is when journalists bring it up because that will always be better than lying and not being able to cover that lie with more lies.
“Because I’m not a politician.
Maybe that’s why. I’m just a goalkeeper. I have to catch a ball and kick it. It’s much, much easier to keep up with your previous interviews if you’re just honest and you never lie and you’re just open.
You ask me a question, I answer the question as honestly as I can. You know, there are things I would rather not talk about. The subject that we mentioned, I would rather not talk about it.
But if somebody asks me, yeah [I smoke]. But I would rather not have the question asked because I don’t want to be a bad example,” Szczesny added.
