Youth empowerment is critical for the development of any society, especially in Nigeria and Africa, where the majority of the population is under 25 years old. Harnessing the potential of young people is not only essential for economic growth but also for ensuring social stability and innovation. Several organizations, both local and global, are actively investing in programs that empower young Africans to build a sustainable future. One of these global companies, Nestlé, has been both strategic and intentional in driving youth empowerment, complementing initiatives across Africa writes Seunmanuel Faleye.

As a global company, Nestlé’s commitment to empowering youth is evident through its initiatives that promote skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship. Nestlé launched the Nestlé Global Youth Initiative (GYI) with a target to help 10 million young people worldwide access economic opportunities by 2030. The initiative focuses on offering training, internships, and apprenticeships to equip young people with the skills needed for employment or entrepreneurship.

In Nigeria, Nestlé Nigeria PLC has been at the forefront of empowering local youth through its various programs aimed at improving employability. In collaboration with partners and governmental bodies, Nestlé Nigeria has helped create job opportunities and provided training in the areas of food production and entrepreneurship. Nestlé Nigeria’s Technical Training Programme, for example, has provided hands-on technical and industrial training to young Nigerians, enhancing their employability and enabling them to secure jobs in the manufacturing industry.

Nestlé recognizes that technology plays a major role in youth empowerment and has incorporated it into its training programs. The company’s Alliance for YOUth program, which operates globally, aims to tackle youth unemployment by offering digital skills training. In Nigeria, Nestlé Nigeria PLC has participated in this program by providing workshops and training sessions that equip young people with the technological expertise needed in today’s digital economy.

Empowering youth in agriculture is another area where Nestlé has made significant contributions. Through its Nestlé Farmers Programme, the company supports young agricultural entrepreneurs across Africa by providing training on sustainable farming practices. In Nigeria, where agriculture remains a key sector for employment, Nestlé partners with local communities and governments to promote agricultural entrepreneurship among the youth.

Ada Osakwe, a young agribusiness entrepreneur and founder of Agrolay Ventures, is a key example of how initiatives in agriculture are transforming youth empowerment. Ada’s business works closely with organizations like Nestlé, which has created a market for locally sourced agricultural products. By engaging young people in agribusiness, Nestlé not only helps reduce youth unemployment but also fosters food security and sustainability.

Government and Global Initiatives: The Bigger Picture

In addition to Nestlé’s efforts, the Nigerian government and other global players have recognized the importance of youth empowerment. The Nigerian Youth Investment Fund (NYIF) launched in 2020 is an example of a government-led initiative aimed at supporting young entrepreneurs and innovators. By providing financial support and training, the fund aims to reduce unemployment and increase the participation of youth in economic activities.

Globally, initiatives like the Tony Elumelu Foundation’s Entrepreneurship Programme and the African Leadership Academy (ALA) in South Africa are also making strides in youth development. These programs provide young Africans with mentorship, funding, and skills training to foster entrepreneurship and leadership across the continent.

Despite the significant efforts being made by organizations like Nestlé and others, many challenges remain. Youth in Africa, including Nigeria, face high levels of unemployment, poor infrastructure, and limited access to quality education. However, through partnerships between governments, businesses, and local communities, these challenges can be addressed. The future lies in continuous investment in education, skills development, and entrepreneurship to create a sustainable, inclusive economy.

Final Thoughts

Finally, youth empowerment in Nigeria and Africa remains a critical factor for the continent’s long-term development. Companies like Nestlé, through their global and local initiatives, are playing an instrumental role in shaping a future where young people have access to the opportunities they need to thrive. By investing in education, technology, and agriculture, Nestlé is empowering the next generation of African leaders and entrepreneurs. The potential of Africa’s youth is immense, and with continued support from businesses, governments, and civil society, the youth will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in driving the continent’s growth and innovation.
