The United States government has placed 110 Nigerians on a list of 355 West African nationals slated for deportation as part of a renewed immigration enforcement campaign under President Donald Trump’s administration.
The deportation exercise is being carried out through the expanded West Africa Operations Watch (WOW) initiative, a program aimed at identifying and removing foreign nationals found to be in violation of U.S. immigration laws.
According to a list released by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Nigeria accounts for the highest number of individuals marked for deportation, with 110 citizens included in the operation. The list, which reportedly contains the names and photographs of all affected individuals, shows that Liberia follows with 94 nationals, while Ghana and Senegal have 30 and 19 persons respectively.
Other West African countries represented on the deportation list include Cameroon with 15 nationals, The Gambia and Côte d’Ivoire with 14 each, Mauritania with 12, Cape Verde with 11, Burkina Faso with nine, Niger with eight, Guinea and Togo with six each, Mali with five, and one individual each from Benin and Guinea-Bissau.
Although authorities did not disclose the specific offenses linked to those on the current deportation list, previous operations conducted under the same enforcement framework targeted individuals convicted of serious crimes, including fraud, money laundering, drug trafficking, and violent criminal offenses. The initiative has often been categorized under the U.S. government’s “Worst of the Worst” immigration enforcement program.
The inclusion of 110 Nigerians makes the country the largest national group affected by the latest operation, highlighting the scale of the U.S. government’s efforts to address immigration violations involving West African nationals.
U.S. officials stated that the deportations form part of a broader strategy to tackle issues such as visa overstays, criminal convictions, fraudulent documentation, and unlawful residence in the country.
The latest move reflects the Trump administration’s continued emphasis on stricter immigration policies, tighter border controls, and accelerated deportation procedures for undocumented migrants and foreign nationals who fail to meet immigration requirements.
The development has sparked discussions across the region, particularly in Nigeria, where concerns are growing over the welfare and reintegration of citizens who may be returned as part of the enforcement exercise.
The expanded crackdown signals Washington’s determination to strengthen immigration compliance and enforce existing laws as part of its wider national security and border management agenda.
