The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has discovered a residential building in Lagos allegedly being used to store empty alcohol bottles for the production of counterfeit drinks.
The agency said the bottles, packed in sacks, were found at 322B Meiran Road, Agbado, Oke Odo.
In a video posted on its official X page on Friday, NAFDAC said over 100 sacks of the empty bottles were found and destroyed to prevent their reuse in making fake alcoholic beverages.
The Assistant Director of the agency’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, Kunle Ojo, said operatives acted on credible intelligence about suspicious activities in the secluded neighbourhood.
“We got credible intelligence that in this particular area, a lot of nefarious activities were taking place. This is the gate to the building; it’s a residential area, and on arriving, we saw different kinds of bottles stacked in this place,” he said.
Ojo said some of the bottles were covered with tarpaulins, ready to be supplied to counterfeiters, while others were being packed on the other side of the building. He added that they came in different sizes and included brands such as Action Bitters and Hennessy.
According to him, the suspects wash the used bottles and supply them to suspected counterfeiters for fresh production.
“This is a residential area, and this is not acceptable to the government. We are here to safeguard the health of the nation,” he said.
Ojo urged members of the public to report suspicious activities in their communities to the nearest NAFDAC office to help curb the spread of counterfeit drinks.
The discovery is the latest in a series of enforcement actions by the agency this month. On October 13, NAFDAC operatives raided over 20 makeshift stores at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex in Ojo, seizing fake spirits, expired drinks and banned imports.
