At least 12 states across Nigeria have enacted the tax harmonisation law, a key component of the wider tax reform programme introduced by the administration of Bola Tinubu.
The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms and Minister of State for Finance-designate, Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday.
According to Oyedele, an additional 13 states have already submitted the proposed legislation to their respective state assemblies for consideration, while several others are at various stages of implementing the reform measures.
He explained that the initiative is aimed at modernising Nigeria’s fiscal system, improving the business environment, protecting vulnerable citizens and repositioning the country’s economic structure.
Oyedele noted that the tax harmonisation law seeks to eliminate multiple and nuisance taxes while preventing the harassment of citizens by tax collectors operating under different authorities.
He added that the reform would simplify the tax framework, strengthen the protection of taxpayers’ rights and address cases of unfair taxation across the country.
“Transparency, fiscal discipline, responsibility and accountability remain critical pillars of an effective tax system,” Oyedele said.
