As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, GoNigeria has warned that comprehensive electoral reform is both urgent and unavoidable. The civic group emphasized the need to strengthen public confidence in the country’s electoral system.
In a statement titled “Electoral Reform and the Sanctity of Nigeria’s Democratic Future”, GoNigeria’s convener, Mr. Atedo Peterside, alongside 24 other members, highlighted electoral reforms, judicial reforms, freedom of speech, and the security of life and property as critical pillars for a durable and effective democracy.
The statement noted growing concern over declining public trust, revealing that surveys show fewer than 50 percent of Nigerians have confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Distrust is reportedly highest in the South-South and South-East regions, with nearly 75 percent of young Nigerians aged 18 to 35 expressing doubts about the electoral system’s ability to deliver free and fair elections.
“Electoral reform is foundational to our democracy,” the statement read. “Elections not only select leaders but also determine whether power is accepted as legitimate, institutions are trusted, and governance is effective. Where elections are credible, authority is strengthened.”
The group recalled recommendations from the Justice Mohammed Uwais-led Electoral Reform Committee, which stressed the independence of INEC, transparency, credible dispute resolution, and strict enforcement of electoral rules. Subsequent innovations, including biometric voter registration, Permanent Voter Cards, and electronic accreditation, were cited as steps toward enhancing public confidence.
However, GoNigeria noted that progress has been fragile. Post-2019 and 2023 elections saw public trust decline due to uneven technology use, weak enforcement, and reliance on courts to settle disputes.
The statement warned that weak electoral systems risk increased violence, unaccountable governments, and compromised institutions. “Following the assent to the Electoral Act 2026, the focus must shift to effective implementation and rebuilding public confidence,” it added.
GoNigeria pledged to continue practical and inclusive measures, including supporting voter registration, encouraging informed public debate on electoral transparency, and engaging institutions to ensure elections are credible, verifiable, and widely trusted.
