Popular music executive, Obi Asika has spoken up on the challenges Burna Boy faced on his road to stardom.
Speaking during a recent interview on the Afropolitan Podcast, Obi revealed that it got so tough, Burna Boy even struggled to get a slot to perform for free.
According to him, because Burna Boy was from Port Harcourt and not Lagos State, the gatekeepers in the Nigerian music industry did everything within their power to frustrate all of his efforts to become a household name with his music.
Asika confirmed that it was so sad to see influential figures in the industry consistently block every path Damini tried to take to make it big as a musician in Nigeria, but now that he is arguably Nigeria’s best export after crude oil, no one can block the Odogwu himself anymore.
“This same Burna Boy that’s a million dollars plus today, they be blocking him…He’s from Port Harcourt, he’s not from Lagos, so they be blocking him,
The same Burna Boy has bypassed everybody and exploded and now he can’t be blocked anymore,” he said.
Confirming all Obi had to say, Burna Boy himself took to his social media page to write that the music executive only scratched the surface with his grass to grace story, and the gatekeepers actually did more than Obi mentioned to break him.
According to the “Last Last” crooner, while they still try their very best to cancel him and his sound in Nigeria, all their hateful attacks ever do is start an unquenchable fire within him to keep putting them to shame.
“This is not even half of the story. They did everything they possibly could to break me, they are even still trying their best lol but all they did was create this unquenchable FIRE that will continue to burn them for eternity,” Burna said.
The Grammy award winner has always claimed that a lot of individuals in the Nigerian music industry, including some people in the media, blacklisted him and his music. And this alleged witch hunt has been tagged as the reason Burna Boy constantly disregards the Nigerian music ecosystem.
