The United States Embassy in Nigeria has expressed strong disapproval of the extravagant lifestyle of several Nigerian state governors, accusing them of misusing public funds on vanity projects while citizens continue to suffer under harsh economic conditions.

In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, the embassy referenced an investigative report that exposed how billions of naira are being allocated for luxurious government house renovations and construction projects, despite the economic pain resulting from President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms.
“While Nigerians are tightening their belts, the same cannot be said of the ruling class,” the U.S. Embassy stated, echoing concerns from transparency and accountability advocates.
Among the projects highlighted in the report was the Oyo State Government’s approval of N63.4 billion for the renovation of its Government House, described by Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration as “an embarrassment.”

In Gombe State, Governor Inuwa Yahaya has reportedly earmarked N14.9 billion for a new ultra-modern residence and an additional N14.23 billion for a new House of Assembly complex—despite Gombe being ranked among Nigeria’s poorest states.
The U.S. Embassy described such spending as “a clear demonstration of fiscal irresponsibility,” adding that “such alleged lack of fiscal responsibility fuels inequality and erodes public trust.”
The embassy’s criticism comes as Nigerians continue to endure the ripple effects of economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and floating of the naira, which have led to surging inflation, job losses, and a sharp increase in the cost of living.
Advocacy groups quoted in the report also called for an urgent reassessment of governance priorities at sub-national levels, urging state governments to focus on people-centered policies instead of indulging in luxurious projects that offer little or no direct benefit to citizens.
