The Federal Government has directed immediate palliative works on the deteriorating Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Road to address critical damage and ease traffic congestion along the major corridor.
Works Minister Dave Umahi announced the intervention during an inspection of the federal highway connecting Lagos and Ogun states. He said repair works would target approximately 18 kilometres of the most damaged sections, with construction crews working primarily at night to minimize disruption to motorists.
Out of the 22 kilometres assessed, the government is prioritizing the worst-affected areas while already managing about 60 kilometres along the entire corridor through phased construction.
Umahi explained that past concession disputes and faulty engineering designs caused the road’s current poor condition. He noted that the Ota-bound carriageway has experienced more extensive deterioration compared to the Lagos-bound lane.
“Low-lying failed areas will be reconstructed with concrete to ensure durability,” the minister stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to lasting solutions.
A second construction phase will include complete resurfacing, replacement of bridge expansion joints, and installation of solar-powered streetlights. Once repairs are finished, a concessionaire will take over operations and maintenance of the highway.
